What it is
Water damage that arrives from above: a roof detail that failed, a supply or drain line in a ceiling cavity, an attic air handler that condensed, or an overflow from the floor upstairs. The stain on the ceiling is where the water came out, not where it went in, and the cavity above it holds more water than the stain suggests.
When it is needed
A stain that appears or keeps growing, a ceiling that sags or feels soft, a light fitting that drips, or a mark that only shows up in certain weather. A stain painted over last year that has come back through the paint is the same job, found later.
What it typically involves
The source is traced uphill from the stain, along joists, ducts and pipe runs, because water travels until something stops it. The leak is corrected first. Then the cavity is opened: soaked insulation comes out, since it has lost its value once wet, and the framing and the back of the ceiling are dried and read until they reach the dry standard. Only then is the ceiling repaired and repainted. Doing it in the other order hides the evidence while the moisture stays exactly where it was.
