Water Out, Structure Dried

Altoona, PA Water Damage Restoration

Homes across Altoona and the rest of Pennsylvania get one sequence: water out, structure dried to a measured standard, rebuild last. An independent local pro takes the call.

Local and independent · the visit decides the scope

  • Round-the-clock cover for water that is still standing
  • Local contractors, independent of this site
  • Scope written at the property by the pro who attends
  • Readings against IICRC S500 settle when drying is done
  • 24/7 emergency response

Round the clock, because water that is standing at 3am is still standing at 6am.

  • No lead form

Quoted by the contractor on site. No form, no list, no resale.

A referral network of independent water damage contractors, reached through one number, in every state.

The order a drying job runs in

Equipment matters less than sequence. IICRC S500 sets out these stages, each of them the contractor's to carry out, and each one sizing the stage that follows it.

  1. Step 1: Stop and remove

The source is shut off, then free water is pumped and extracted. Every hour water stands, it climbs further into drywall and subfloor, so this stage sets the size of everything after it.

  2. Step 2: Open and map

Baseboard, wet drywall and soaked insulation come out, and meters read the material behind them. The wet edge is marked where the moisture stops, not where the stain does.

  3. Step 3: Dry to a number

Air movers and dehumidifiers run as a sealed system, and the same points are read daily. The equipment leaves when the readings reach the dry standard for that material, not on a set day.

  4. Step 4: Close up

Rebuild starts only after the structure is confirmed dry. Insulation, drywall and finishes go back over an assembly that will not feed anything later.

Drying conditions particular to Altoona

When a floor is wet in Altoona, the call routes to an independent local contractor for water damage restoration, across town and out to Downtown, Llyswen, and Broad Avenue. The rows here step up the hillside, so each house sits a few feet higher than the one attached to it.

What is behind the walls here

The typical Altoona house dates to 1944, with close to nine in ten of the stock (95.1 percent) built before 1990, so the assemblies that get wet are mostly mid 1940s work. Around a median of 1944 with 95 percent of the stock older, the railroad rows were built across the slope rather than along the contour, so a terrace of attached houses climbs as it goes and every party wall has a step in it.

The drying weather

4 months in Altoona have normal lows below freezing, January the coldest at 18.8 degrees. The rain side of the calendar peaks in May at 4.41 inches of an annual 44.72; both figures recorded at ALTOONA 3 W, 3.6 miles away. May is the wettest month at 4.41 inches of a 45-inch year and four months average a low below freezing, so heavy spring rain runs down a slope lined with attached houses; each step in the row is a place for it to stop.

Where these losses tend to land

  • A step at every party wall, so there is a vertical junction between each pair of houses
  • The uphill house's floor above the downhill one's ceiling, so water crosses between them
  • Ground falling along the row, so the lowest house receives from all the ones above

Frequently asked questions

Why do the houses step rather than run level?

Because the row was built across a slope. Rather than cut a level terrace, each house was set a few feet higher than its neighbor, so the roof line and the floor levels climb the hill in steps along the whole length of the row.

What happens at each step?

There is a short vertical section of party wall exposed between the two roofs, flashed where the higher house rises above the lower one. That flashing is the weak point, and there is one of them between every pair of houses in the row.

Which house ends up with the damage?

The lower one, usually, because water crossing at a step arrives above its ceiling. So the household with the stain is frequently not the one whose flashing has failed, and sorting that out is the first part of the job.
