Why does this siding change how a wall is opened?
Because the covering does not survive being taken off. The shingles are brittle and face-nailed, so removing a section to get at wet sheathing breaks most of what is removed and often some of what is not. That turns a small opening into a patch of wall that has to be reclad afterward.
So is the wall opened from inside instead?
Usually, yes. Taking the board off the inside face reaches the same framing and the same insulation without touching the elevation, and it is far easier to make good afterward. It puts the mess in the room rather than on the outside of the house, which is the trade most people accept.
