How much does a passing ship actually move?
More than people expect. A large vessel in a confined channel pulls the water down along the bank as it passes and then sends a surge back, so the level at the shore drops and rises by a foot or more within a minute or two.
Why is that harder on a bank than a storm?
Because it repeats. A storm works a bank for hours and then stops for months; ship wash does the same thing several times a day through the whole navigation season, so the bank never gets a period in which to stabilize.
What holds up against it?
Properly engineered bank protection keyed well below the low-water level, rather than anything placed on the surface. Riprap tipped on a bank without a keyed toe is undermined by the drawdown and ends up at the bottom of the channel.
