Why does the equipment have to be different down there?
Because nothing stands up. The basements were dug shallow and the pipes and ducts were run below the joists rather than between them, so the clear height is under six feet in most of these. Standard equipment does not fit and everything has to work lying down or ducted.
Does the low ceiling change the drying itself?
It changes how fast conditions move, both ways. A small volume of air loads up quickly when something is wet and it also comes down quickly once equipment is running, so these can be faster than a large basement provided the equipment is the right shape.
