What is behind the aluminum at the eaves?
The original wood fascia and soffit, still there. The metal was wrapped over the top of it rather than replacing it, so there is timber inside a skin that water can get behind at the joints and cannot get back out of. It has been like that for decades.
How would anyone know it is rotting?
Usually by something else failing first: a gutter pulling away, a soffit panel sagging, or water appearing at the top of a wall inside. The wrap itself looks the same whatever is behind it, which is exactly why these go so long without being found.
Does the wrap come off?
Along the affected run, yes, because there is no other way to see or dry what is under it. It comes off in sections, the timber is assessed by hand, and what has gone is replaced before anything is re-covered. Rewrapping over soft wood simply restarts it.
