What is behind the window frame in these houses?
The original frame, still in place. When these windows were changed the new units were fitted inside the existing openings rather than the old frames being removed, so there is a second frame buried in the wall around each one, with a gap between the two that nothing can reach.
Why is an old frame behind a new window a problem?
Because it is timber in a closed space. Water getting past the new unit collects between the two frames, where there is no air movement and no way to read it from the room, and in a climate with no dry season it stays there. A window that reads dry can have a wet frame behind it.
Does the replacement window have to come out?
