How does an outdoor fitting damage the inside of the house?
Because it is connected to it. The irrigation supply is taken off the house system and runs out through the wall to a device on the outside, so a split there is fed from indoors at full pressure. The water runs back down the wall it is fixed to, into the framing and the rim below.
When do these failures happen?
Almost always at the first hard freeze of the season, and rarely after that. What gets opened inside?
