What is decomposed granite?
Granite that has weathered in place into a coarse sandy material. It holds a cut face, compacts hard and carries load perfectly well while it is dry, which is most of the year here, and it loses a great deal of that as soon as water gets into it.
How does a supply leak change ground like this?
Because a leak changes the ground rather than just wetting it. Water from a failed line under or beside the building saturates material that was behaving like rock, and it starts behaving like sand, so movement and washout follow the water rather than accompanying it.
Is the ground worth checking after the repair?
It is, and it is often skipped. Ground that has been saturated and has moved does not go back to where it was when it dries, so the paving, the slab edge and anything bearing on it are looked at once the source is fixed rather than assumed intact.
